Your house is your home, and your home is your castle; they are our sanctuaries, our places of comfort and recollection. Creating a beautiful home doesn't have to be an arduous task, but rather can be made to be a fun and exhilarating experience which will make us feel even closer to our home because we completed some tasks ourselves such as patio gardening. What is Patio Gardening?Patio gardening is, as it sounds quite obviously, the act of gardening or decorating a patio. Patios are more than relaxing and lounging areas, they provide function in a garden, and are also essential to fun and lively entertaining outdoors. Three of the most popular choices in the patio garden are: potted herbs, a mini alpine garden, and shrubs in tubs. The first, potted herbs, add a basic but nevertheless essential additive to your patio gardening. Not only that, but fresh herbs are the secret to delicious cooking; in this sense, they make more than just attractive plants, they are useful as well. Potting herbs for your patio garden is not a difficult task; first, you must choose a large, deep bowl, and fill the base with crocks for drainage. Cover this with a layer of gritty loam-based compost, and then plant any of your favorite herbs. Some ideas for choices are: rosemary, chives, curry plant, thyme, oregano and parsley. After this, firm the compost around each plant with your hand or a hand tool such as a spade, making sure to leave a space between the compost and the rim of the bowl. Remember to allow the plant sufficient sunlight, and be sure to water regularly throughout the summer. Making a miniature alpine garden is a fun and easy idea to add some flair to your patio garden. Shallow oval bowls are useful for housing many different types of alpines, and narrow pots can be placed on window sills year round. A strawberry pot can also be utilized for alpines, as well as an old pair of boots. Growing a shrub is another easy way to brighten up the patio when patio gardening. Pot selection is important, as you must choose a container that is large enough to give the shrub's roots room to grow. Drainage is also incredibly important, and a good idea for this is to put a layer of broken terracotta crocks at the bottom of the container before filling it with compost.
