Types of Herbs Used in Herb Gardening
Herbs can be of various kinds depending on their end use, though they are mainly used for cooking and for medicinal healing. You can grow your own herbs and some useful tips are given to help you in your pursuit of herb gardening. The major different types of herbs that are grown are for arts and crafts, culinary purposes, medicinal herbs and those that have multiple uses. Herbs used in arts and crafts include sweet annie and catnip and these may be used for home craft or for natural fiber dyes.
Imagine the beauty of the rich tones of autumn woods and the bright colors of spring with flowers and leaves of different colors adorning the landscape. Surely they will make a distinct impression on anyone and in order to capture these vibrant colors it is possible to use herbs and color wool and cloth and capture those beautiful and vibrant colors of nature. This means that one should know how to grow herbs and herb gardening is an art in itself since growing herbs is not a difficult task as they do not require much space and in fact, can flourish nicely in flower pots and thus are easy to grow and are ideally suited for small gardens.
You can buy pots especially made to grow herbs which have some holes in the side of the plant and are best suited for herbs such as thyme. Using such kinds of pots requires that you also plant herbs that suit this particular type of pot since herbs have unique feeding and maintenance requirements and only those herbs will flourish in these pots that require these kinds of holes. Otherwise, it may be best to use individual pots for each different variety of herbs that you wish to grow, but whatever be the pot used it should have drainage holes in the side, stones or gravel at the bottom to facilitate good drainage.
Potting compost needs to be added to the pots and these are readily available at most gardening shops and good compost should have much nutrient value as well as be strong. In the first four to five weeks after planting herbs in potted compost, herbs may not need any feeding though watering them is necessary. After these four to five weeks, feeding will become necessary and in extra warm conditions extra feeding will become necessary.
Herb gardening for the small gardener may require organic feeding which are dependent on the scale of herb gardening and a gardening center will be able to advise you about the optimum amount of feeding required. Certain herbs look scruffy and may need trimming to make them look neat and for herbs made for cooking tea, you may cut off the amount required for making the tea and leave the rest as neatly cut. In temperate climates, herbs may be left outdoors during wintertime but in excessively colder climates it becomes necessary to bring them in. Growing in itself is a fun experience and growing herbs is certainly not an exception so one should enjoy the experience and get the best out of the herb gardening.
