Best Choices for Gardening Supplies

Today's gardening supplies have come a long way. Long ago, plain-looking, recognizable items were necessary tools when growing food for tables. Take a visit to the hardware story and you'll see how much gardening supplies have changed. They've become a sign of just how 'in' you are, or how 'green' your thumb is. There are colourful stainless-steel claws and rakes, or designer buckets that would make your neighbours jealous. But what do you really need to look for when shopping for gardening supplies?

The Plain Old Truth

Gardening has become a status symbol. There's no real need to grow our own food anymore, and those who garden do it for fun or to supplement their table food with organic fruit and vegetables. Gardening supplies show off this luxurious attitude, and taking a trip down an aisle in your favourite store is confusing, at best. Do you really need that long-handled, multi-pronged, forked twister that promises to give you better food just by stirring up your dirt?

Well, maybe. If a strange-looking tool or a pink shovel makes your work easier or more fun, so much the better. That's the plain old truth - if you're motivated and encouraged to grow your own food, you'll enjoy the fruits of your labour that much more. Working outside in the sunshine, surrounded by nature and enjoying your new, bright purple, comfi-rest knee pad can be a relaxing task. But there are a few things you should still be wary of, when shopping for gardening supplies.

Solid construction is something everyone should look for in gardening supplies. Your tools will work hard, and they might get dinged against rocks or hard earth. The last thing you want is a tool that's cheaply made, to avoid breakage or parts that snap off. The second thing you should look for in your gardening supplies is ease of use and comfort. Is your grip on the handle slipping? Do you have to twist your arm in an uncomfortable position to get the most out of your new, very expensive too? If so, the fancy object of your affection is better left on the shelf. You'll end up frustrated and abandoning gardening forever, and you'll be a few dollars poorer.

Look for gardening supplies that will help you work, and get the most out of your time and effort. Try to find tools that will weather well, and are resistant to scratches or bending. Make sure your tools don't leave you with sore hands or arms, unless you've just been using lots of elbow grease. And lastly, take care of the gardening supplies you buy, even if it's just an old, plain, wooden-handled hoe.
